understanding ports...

alright i understand somewhat of tuning ports and how big the port should be for the box to sound decent. well my buddy keeps talkin bout "pressure" but i understand that some pressure is needed in the box but he keeps tellin me to make the port smaller so it has more pressure or some shit and i dont see it sounding so great. but i wanna know what to do when building an enclosure that is tuned low, does the port need to be a huge port or a smaller size or what. i got a box now with 3 massive CW12s in it thats 6 net with displacement of subs and ports. i got 3 4 inch by 24 aeros in it but it doesnt sound like it should. i wanna be able to feel air moving around me. and right now it doesnt really sound like it is supposed to so if someone can give me some insight on how or what i should do please help meh thnx...

Whenever you're tuned low you typically need MORE port area to overcome the massive amount of air moving through the port, otherwise you will end up with port noise. Unless you're not running a whole lot of power that is. But I just ran the numbers and you're tuned to 24hz???? and you're wondering why you don't have air moving? If you would tune higher, to say maybe 30hz even you would see a GREAT improvement. Because unless you listen to strictly C and S stuff, which you prob do tuned that low, but I would still venture to say that you wouldn't miss out on any LOWS if you tuned higher. Cut the ports down to around 13-14" each. Should help out tremendously.

And you're port area is fine, so don't make it smaller...You're "buddy" is misinformed. As of now you have around 6.3" ish of port area per cube, which is BARELY enough for aeros. It's fine for daily though so don't go changing it.

well thats basically all i listen to period is cs music. and i tuned a box to 30 before and it sounded like ***. i hate to hear a sub struggling to play a low note. i tune super low cause alot of my buddies have 3 10s and some how there box is built so perfect that it moves air like 2 15s but its 3 whimpy lil 10s =/ i wana be able to move some hair on a low note. im sure its possible and i will achieve this some how but i am still tryin to understand how there box is tuned and built but they wont let me get the dementions off there box. i tried to even pay them just so i could see what there tuned to and they said no...

but as of now the box that the 3 12s are in doesnt sound right to me, it does all the notes but it doesnt grab the lows like i want =/. either build another box or try and tweek this one...

The lower you tune, the less port area that is required to avoid port noise. Think of it this way, fewer cycles per second = slower movement of air through the port, therefore less need for a big port.

Three 12's should wang, so there's got to be some sort of problem. What vehicle is all this in, and how do you have the box set up as far as location and sub/port direction?

well i got a 6 cf box with 3 4 inch by 24 long aeros that should be around 24 -26 hz but it sounds like *** to me. didnt impress me at all but i blocked off 2 of the aeros and now i feel alot more air movement then with all 3. but its in a 95 jetta with a huge trunk and the subs are facing towards the lid and i refuse to change this cause it has always given me better results with sound. and the ports are facing the driver side of the box.

What kind of amp? Is there a subsonic filter? Can you disable it? My Zenon board amps don't do 20-25hz as well as amps with no HPF.
yes i can turn it all the way down to 0 and i can tell a difference but i know for sure its the box. its a massive N4 2000.1
