Understanding HDMI cables....

Hey all. Im new to this whole HDMI thing. Now, I bought an upconverting DVD player for my tv. Now when i i bought it, i was told i needed a special cable. It looks like a USB plug kinda. But, on the back of my TV, it looks like something id plug a computer monitor into. With the screw holes on the side and everything. Maybe someone here can shine a light on what i need to buy. Because it doesnt seem like a regular HDMI cable will work with my HDTV.

HDMI to DVI is what it sounds like you need.

You'll spend a lot of money buying one in a retail store...I ordered all of my cables from http://www.monoprice.com and they were great- they are highly recommended on avsforum

ahhhhh yes. I saw one of those in walmart for like 28 bucks. DVI doesnt do audio though, right?

is the screw in connector on your tv blue? if so thats vga dvi looks similar but the plastic will be white . whats the model of the tv you have?

also keep in mind if your tv is not 1080p you can just use component cables to connect the dvd player .

1080p can be passed via component cables to (depending on the tv)

only difference is the protection thing with hdmi (dunno the name of it) when upconverting dvds you NEED hdmi or it wont upconvert to anything higher then 480p but some oppos can be hacked to upconvert through component cable...

hdcp? yea dunno what i was thinking forgot about the hdmi protection .i just use a hacked xbox running xbmc @720p through component cables. still waiting for the outcome of the bluray/hd-dvd war
