underpowering

Umm first of all I don't actually know how much everything cost. I don't check anymore as I have someone who puts in the order for me. I've been through several subs in the past couple months and my friend knows what my price range is...I am actually knowledgeable about subs but the problem is that I've never had less power from an amp than my sub could take. No need to be an *** dude. Just asking a simple question because of the wide variety in opinions on these forums. And as to the comment about the milk...no need to be patronizing. As soon as I figure out how to post pics using a mac ill put up my new box and sub. Thanks

Don't sweat it terra. On this forum if you have a low post count and you ask noobish questions you get about a 50/50 of helpful/sarcastic replies. Lots of people were born CA experts apparently.

I have a dmx stage 2 15 and an earthquake 5000 watt amp. i plan to run at 4 ohm until i get my new alt and then go down to 2 ohm. my question is...my sub has a 3000 watt rms. at 4 ohm my amp gives 1500 rms and 3000 peak. will underpowering hurt my sub? i doubt i have the power right now to push 2 ohm....

How are you gonna wire at 4 ohms now and 2 ohms later???? That's not possible unless i got so much shit on im my that I cant remember well enough...i did forget my bank account number, i then remembered it...but wiring at both at 4 and 2 ohms???

To honestly answer the intial question:

No underpowering a sub cannot blow it.

Like someone else has said, what blows a sub is when people crank up the gain on the amp to try and compensate for underpowering the sub in an attempt to give it more power, which can blow the sub if done for long enough.

Do raise a different concern:

My thoughts exactly.

A Dual 2 ohm sub can be ran at 4 and 1

A Dual 4 ohm sub can be ran at 8 and 2

A Quad 2 can be run at 8, 2, and 0.5

A Quad 1 can ran at 4, 1, and 0.25.

I know there are more configurations, but the point is there is no sub that can be ran safely at 4 ohm and then 2 ohm later on.

So the sub will be run at 2 or 4 depending on voice coil configuration.

If it's gonna be run at 4 ohm, run it underpowered and live with it or buy a different amp.

If it's gonna be run at 2 ohm, save up and buy the alt before hooking everything up.

It is a qvc. I didn't think it could be wired at 2 ohm but I do believe I saw something in the manual about 2 ohm wiring. Ill check it later as I just glanced through it. Thanks to those who helped though
