Underpowering Subs. Need Help

I recently purchased 2 12" Cerwin Vega Vmax subs that are 600watts rms each. My current amp can run at 500watts @ 2ohms it is a mono channel amp. I realize that i will be really underpowering these. so i will be getting 250 rms to each sub that is capable of 600watts rms.(500 watts rms out of 1200 capable with the pair) Would these still sound decent? If i dont turn the gain up and keep it like half way should the subs and amp be safe in terms of clipping? also since the subs are only getting 250 rms each should they still push some air considering the xmax is 17mm? thanks

Set your gains using a DMM and you should be all set.

Best my XXX ever sounded was on 400 watts. Rated for 1600. Ratings are a max not a goal.

every time you have the volume turned down you will be "under powering" your subs.
