Simple answer: No.

Can they be blown with less then RMS going to them? Yes. If you are trying to get them louder, you may attempt to turn the gain up too high or use "loud" or bass boost. This could cause clipping. In turn the clipped signal will produce extra heat and can cause damage to your speaker.

What you just described was in fact thermal damage.

The point is, in that case they would be receiving more than their thermal power rating...

The way to kill speakers without exceeding their thermal limits is mechanically, like playing a sub below tuning frequency where the cone is not controlled by the enclosure.

But couldnt an extremely clipped singal cause the same thermal damage as running it above RMS?
