I agree with helping our veterans, but that help has to stop somewhere. We are, after all, a free society where people are free to make their own choices. The flip side to that is we are also free to live with the consequences of our choices, good or bad. Health care, yes our vets should get the best we can afford them for any injuries or physical/mental illness they received while serving their nation during war. But beyond that, they are still free citizens who must make their way in society. Nobody promised them a free ride the rest of their lives for signing up for the armed services.

So I guess if you got drafted, its society's obligation to give you a free ride through your entire life? Nobody has been drafted in this country for nearly 40 years.

Maybe not "drafted" but they have been called from the reserves. A lot of people that were promised they would never have to serve again are getting called back for a 3rd or 4th tour. This is unheard of in our history before now.

I was also required to sign up for the "selective services". WTF does that mean? I told them I was not required to sign for the draft/selective services because I am the last child in my family line. They said that no longer applies and I had to sign up regardless. They shouldn't be in what position, exactly? If you are still referring to the reserves getting called up, you are severely veering from the topic of homeless vets.

They do. I think our VA system needs some serious improving, like most all govt run programs, but I find it hard to swallow that homeless vets are a societal problem that tax payers should be required to support. On the one hand, liberals claim we need to slash our defense budget, but on the other hand they also seem to want the tax payer to support veterans for life. I wish we could, but we cant. I wish I could live in that liberal dream world, but I cant.

What is unconstitutional is the fact the democrats do not have a budget passed or a tax code passed before the elections and now we have a 1.2 trillion dollar omnibus spending bill rammed through by a lame duck congress and no official tax code yet. Why didn't they do this before? Because they would have gotten hammered worse!

If you consider being on a VA waiting list to be served by a doctor who really doesn't get paid enough to do his job "health care". Just ask any vet what quality of health care they received, and I'm sure they will tell you it was mediocre at best. A lot of people I know received faulty dental work that failed either during the war or within a few years after. Most vets receive just enough "care" to get them by or get them out of the hospital, whichever comes first. As far as aftercare or physical rehab.....

As I said above, I agree our VA system needs work, but lets face it, its a govt run system, so its bound to be inefficient, sub-par, and overly expensive for the tax payer. It needs revamped, like so many other govt run programs, but at least its a benefit other non-vets do not get. The point is, we, as tax payers, are not obliged to ensure all our veterans own homes and lead productive lives despite their poor life choices.
