sooo. i've noticed soemthign with tweets, at least one ones ive used. i've had 3 diff HU (decent mp3 panasonic, 880prs, and my avh-p6600dvd), and 3 differant types of component tweets (diamond m3 and m5, inifity silk domes). and every time i play the mids and highs above a certain volume thats too loud (not %100 but very very very high, at least too high for these).....the tweets will go flat and soudns liek ass...then whn i roll the volume back down to a certain point (like halfway up) they come back to normal.....then if i turn them up too high again same thing, then i turn it back down and back to normal. happens ussualyl on heavy metal / rock songs that have alot of treble.....

my question is...what exactly is causeing this? is it the tweets dome and VC going out of whack from clipping then goig back to normal when i turn it down.? is it my HU clipping? something wrong IN the HU? ampproblems maybe? (same amp used in all this). anybody else get that problem with the tweets at high enough volume going flat? they dont sound distorted at the volume when this happens, they're just loud, then whomp, flatness....

I dont understand what you mean by going flat!!

but my guess would be the tweet cant handle that much of volume, get better tweets and see ...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

There's probably a protection circuit in the crossover, for the tweeter, that limits the power to a certain level... once that's exceeded, it'll reduce the level by some amount (usually 10dB or so). This is very common in pro-audio speakers, and is becoming more common in car audio, with the advent of mega-power amps.

Better it drop in volume and come back later, than BLOW and not come back at all...

Regards,

Gordon.

BTW: Look in the crossover and see if there's something that looks like a light bulb... that'd be the power limiter. Either that, or a round disc-shaped thing that looks like a ceramic capacitor (flat, tan disc that is somewhere between the size of a dime and a nickel, usually)... those are known as "PTC units", in the trade...

Gordon.

Then the tweeters will have NO over-volume protection, and they'll just blow up. They WILL limit themselves, SOMEHOW... whether it be a limiter upstream, or them just burning out.

The solution is either to get tweeters that handle more power, or to TURN IT DOWN...

Gordon.

ill load some pics of my crossovers later today when i get done with class.....

by flat, i mean it just looses all defining treble that makes a tweet a tweet, it literally like cuts off 80% of its sound and sounds flat...and shitty...
