Tuning a JL audio 1000/1v2 questions

Hello.

I FINALLY had enough time to install everything on my car. I'm still new to this but am learning more each day. I have read the thread on how to adjust the gain properly on the amplifier which i will be doing shorting but i have a few questions about the rest of the adjustments on the JL amp.

Setup is...

Pioneer DEH-P980BT head unit

JL audio 1000/1v2 amp

(2) JL audio 13w6v2 subs in a Sealed box built to JL's specs

Kinetik HC1400 battery

Excessive amperage H/O alternator

1/0 gauge wiring everywhere

First-

It has an amplifier input section which i can either select a High or Low input voltage. My H/U has a preamp output of 5 volts. So would that mean i would select the (high) option?

Next the amps LP filter has Off/12db/24db and filter freq between 40-200hz.

It also has a Bass EQ with options between...

"Q" 0.5-4.3

Center Freq 20-80

Boost 0-15db

From searching i read to tune the gain at 0 boost and not to mess with it afterwards. I also read that since i am using a sealed box to keep the infrasonic filter on the "off" position.

Do you guys just adjust each option according to your taste in sound?

As i said before i'm still new to this, but if possible maybe someone could give me a rough range of where each knob should be set at (besides the gain obviously.)

Music i listen to is mainly rap and deeper bass... for example T.I, Lil Wayne etc.etc.

BTW i attached a picture of the JL amp so you can see the adjustments.

I also attached a few pictures of the setup inside the car.

Thanks!

I had a JL Audio Slash v2 500/1 for a time and had all of the same settings you speak of. I followed the manual as to the settings, especially the voltage. Yes, you would use the high voltage setting if your HU outputs at 5V.

When it comes to the voltage setting going out to the speakers, you can set it per the manual but it will probably be way too low for your liking. I performed the setting per the manual and a 50Hz test tone (with speakers disconnected by the way) and it was too low. So what I did was set my DMM to AC voltage (still with the speakers disconnected) and placed the red probe on the "+" speaker output and the black probe on the "-" speaker output and then placed some of my more bassier (is that a word?) music on my source on the HU and cranked it to as loud as I would typically listen to it and noted the voltage on the heavier bass notes. I tuned the voltage knob accordingly. So, it is really based most on what you prefer.

Did I mention you should perform this test with the speakers disconnected? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I did speak with a JL Audio rep and he said the voltage settings in the manual are a guideline and that typically a person listening to music at such a level where the extreme limits of the amp are going to be reached are rare. Of course, there are some pretty crazy bastards on this forum. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

As far as the Bass EQ and LP Filter, really it is a matter of taste. Listen to your favorite music at different settings and set it to your liking. You won't hurt it, it is a great amp! Wish I still had mine, but no room in the new truck. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

Nice pics by the way...good looking install! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

Thanks for the reply!

I took my time to make the install look as clean as possible //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I finally had time to adjust the input sensitivy correctly. I set the "high" input voltage setting and used the test disc (50 Hz at 0 db) to set voltage at 63.2 Volts which is for 4 ohms. Afterwards i played with the frequency and slope to find a nice setting. Bass eq is off.

Afterwards i figured i'd crank it to see what it can handle and to me it's not what i was expecting. Bass is OK but not loud like i expected. With the windows closed it doesn't even rattle your ears and you can barely feel it in your chest. So i figured i'd stop by a local car audio shop to see what they thought and they told me right away that my system was pretty weak compared to what output it should be throwing out. Of course he didn't test anything but told me if i wanted them to check it all over and figure it out, it would be $45 an hour.

As i said before i did my research beforehand when i installed this, so i was almost certain everything is correct. If anyone has any advice on what i should look over or if you had this issue before please feel free to share it with me.

Thanks for your help!
