Well, the story behind this is this: my bud who I sold a pair of 12 MTX Thunder 8000's and a small Visonik amp to about a year and a half ago finally wanted to upgrade his system. He came to me asking for advice, and I told him a good bet for decently loud on a budget would be Alpine type arghs. He already had a nice ported box he got built for him at a shop that will work great for arghs so he went ahead and bought them. He bought two of these guys right here - http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_4243_Alpine+SWR-1222D+-TYPE+R-.html

I never specified coil configuration for anything specific like that so I assumed he had it under control. Only thing I did specify was that he should buy a good amp that is rated to do 1200 watts rms so he wouldn't have to do any major electrical upgrades. Specifically mentioned that he shouldn't worry about peak and that its irrelevant...sure enough he doesn't pay attention to what I'm saying and buys this - http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_13240_Pioneer+GM-D8400M.html

The amp only does 2 or 4 ohm, how should I go about wiring the subs? I went on to the12volt.com and it says the only wiring options I have are to wire it to 2 ohms. Think I should go ahead and do that for him and have each sub see around 300 watts or so? I know type arghs can take a ton more, thats my only complaint. Better amp would obviously be better I know, but he purchased it from Sonic. They don't just take returns because you dont want something, do they?

offer to return the amp to buy something else??? also those mtx 8000's could have taken more power and he would have just been happy getting a better/bigger amp.

Ya try a return for a bigger amp or tell him buy another one of those and wire one to each sub? im not sure if the ohm cinfiguration will work but if it does one of those to each could work too

The subs were old, probably going on three years or so and one voice coil on one was blownn. Cosmetically they were in horrible condition, probably wouldn't last too much longer.

I actually mentioned one amp per sub and he liked the idea except for the fact that they aren't strap-able so we'de have to run 2 powers, 2 grounds, 2 rca's, etc. Not that that's bad, but this kid's impatient haha. I'm gonna put the amp to 2 ohms today and see how he likes it. If they do surprisingly well, might just keep them off of that. Anyone ever run type r's off of low power?

i would do that.. then eventually upgrade to something that does 1000-1500 @ 2 ohms

you would have to run two power wires and two grounds whether they were stappable or not homie

or you could just run a single 0g and a distro at the amps.
This is what I was thinking about, this is what I did for my strapping set-up.

Regardless, hooked everything up today and I'm terribly surprised on how loud the two R's got. Each sub not even seeing 300 watts a piece and they easily out beat the MTX's. He is very happy with them and has no desire to return the amp.

thats good to hear. type R ftw. im about to run a pair again. im going to only run 1200 to them.
Yeah it was really pleasing to see it all come out right. I'm honestly looking forward to him buying a bigger amp down the road once he gets some cash back and seeing what these things are really capable of.
