Truth on dynamat and baffles

I have searched and read at length anything to do with installing speaker baffles (NOT SPACERS) behind my Boston Acoustics Pro Series 6.5 stock location in the door panel mids.....what would be the perceivedd advandtages and or disadv. from doing so? Would the baffle tend to act as small enclosure for the 6.5 mid? The car I have installed in is a '04 G35 Coupe.

Also, does dynamat or related (ie. cheaper brand) really help that much for resonance and such.....I know for the trunk it can do wonders, I am just referring to the front stage.....any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nate

The baffles are just supposed to keep your subs from ruinning your speakers, im not sure on the enclosure part. They just keep the air from the subs from pushing through your speakers. I know i ruined a set of 6x9s by not putting baffles over them.

Ive heard wonders about dynamat, but have not had the time to put it in my car. It decreases road noises that seap into your car and reduces that annoying rattling sound that your trunk gives off. Dynamat can be used anywhere in your car, a lot of people also put it inside of their doors and ive also heard of it going on the floor and ceiling of the car.

Ya man Dynamat isn;t just something you but it is a straight up investment period. Their slogan is tru too, "Why buy half a system." Reduces trunk noise, keeps all the good stuff inside. I installed just a 4 sq foot piece on the top of my trunk and their was a noticable difference inside and out. I plan on buying 36 sq ft of Extreme Dynamat for $140 on ebay pretty soon. Well worth it in my opinion. Also extremely easy to apply, no heat needed. I put mine on in the middle of winter and it hasn't moved.

I think one of the most important reasons for putting baffles on your front speakers is to protect them against water.
Bingo!

I've never heard of subs ruining speakers because they didn't have a foam baffle. Could you provide a link to some information pertaining to what you have heard?

$140 for 36 sq. ft. is ridiculous. Look into B-Quiet, eDead, even Peel and Seal. You can get it for about $1-$2 per sq. ft. (thats right, 100 sq. ft. for $100, not 36 sq. ft. for $140) and its all the same. As for deadening the front doors, while they dont rattle, it helps to solidify the doors and helps your midbass speakers have a more solid "enclosure" by reducing flexing and covering up holes, making more bass up front. Would you throw a sub in 1/4" plywood? No, so why throw your midbass drivers in a flimsy install as well?

^^^^Yes, do not buy dynamat, it is very over priced. Also, blowing speakers due to subs is very very unlikely. Most likely you drove them into clipping, and had them playing frequencies too low, too loud, with to little unclean power. Also on top of that, a foam baffle will do absolutley nothing to prevent a sub from blowing a 6x9 (Although i feel it isn't an easy task.) The foam baffles are just that, foam, and are porus, they are not airtight, and do not act as an enclosure. This thread is full of inaccurate information. Sounddeadening also usually doesn't do that awesome of stopping road noise, it does keep your music in your car though, and supposedly makes it seem like there is double the power.

I've heard that speakers being ruined due to water damage is a very uncommon occurrence.
Although you may not hear about it, it does happen. Would you install your brand new components without baffles? It may be alright for someone who lives in a drier climate, but here in PA, it very well could be possible that your speakers could get ruined. Just imagine what it could possibly do to the people in WA who have tons of rain. Just my $0.02
