whistling from box

when i was adjusting my gain a little higher my box began making a whistling noise out of the port holes.. is this bad? I can't hear the whistle inside the cabin of the car so i dont know if its bad or not. also how can you tell if a sub is distorting?

The port is probably too small in cross sectional area and you are getting turbulance, which leads port noise.

You can increae the size of the port, which will also require you to make it longer.
