Trunk Rattle

Deadening a trunk never hurt anyone or any car for that matter. But instead of spending the money, figure out what the rattle is coming from and see if you can just fix that. Unless you're wanting a deadened trunk that is. You never know, it may only be a loose bolt or screw or something simple like that. In my car it was the cross members on the inside of the trunk lid. I bought some of that self expanding foam and injected a little in between the member and the lid and viola they never touched again and NO more rattles. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
Is there a limit to where I can use that foam? Because it is relatively cheap, so I was thinking about just getting a can or two and applying it where the trunk lid meets the bumper, and where it sits near the rear window. Those are the two places rattle is comming from...

You want to be carfull with that foam(great stuff). It expands and can warp your panels. Apply it with caution.

Very, very much agreed. In fact one can should do ya. I used a spot smaller than the diameter of a dime to fix my trunk rattle. I've heard stories about people using too much and it bowed out their trunk lid. Not permanently but they had to redo it needless to say.

Just be VERY careful and use it sparingly. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Your trunk lid is rattling where the lid hits the bumper??? Why don't you get some foam rubber and adhere it where you need it to absorb the vibrations.?? That would be easier and you could make it look NOT so white trash if you know what I mean.

Is foam rubber water resistant? If I put it where the trunk meets the back near the rear window, wouldnt it just absord water.. And eventually smell and shit?
To my knowlegde there is no material consisting of foam and rubber...

Most types of foam are not water resistant. Most types of rubber are. Just make sure what you purchase is water resistant.

Foam rubber is what I've always heard it called. Wether its made of both is irrelevant. But either way you don't want to go with that it was a bad idea. I wonder if that pink foam insulation is water resistant.??? That would be good stuff since you could shave it to exaclty the thickness you need.

If all else fails just use some deadening on the area where the lid will be hitting or on lid itself and that should eliminate most of the rattle just not the physical contact.

Ha this forum finally picked up on what I do!

Caulk all the edges of the trunk lid bracing cavities. I suggest windsheild glue but just basic caulk will work too

Blast expanding foam through the hollow cavities. 1 can has enough foam to do multiple lids.

Coat it with undercaoting

apply sounddeadener.

When doing expanding foam, make sure you cover EVERYTHING with plastic, it will expand and drip everywhere. Its a pain in the butt to get out once its on stuff.

Also dont blast foam where there are anywires, just incase you need to get in there sometime!

Is it really that much work if I just want the rattle gone? I dont care if its deadened, I just cant stand the rattling...

Find out whats rattleing. If its just sheetmetal flexing on the trunk lid then the caulk and foam should be fine.

The foam will expand between the cavity and the sheetmetal, idealy pushing it out so it dosnt have the ability to flex up and down. I dont know if that makes sense, but I tried.

I'll try that... Thanks man. It is rattling is like hell with only my (now sold) JBL 600.1, I cant imagine what its going to be like when I get my new amp in... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Let me know how it goes, its a pretty easy 10 dollar sound deadening trick. With just the foam alone you will hear a much more hollow thump when you tap on your trunk lid.

If you want a pic of what im talking about I can send you a pic of my trunk lid. I havent put deadening mat on yet so its just foam and undercoating.

I have yet to go thtrough with a razor and clean of the small pieces of excess foam. Ill do that when I get off my butt to actually put deadener mat on.
