Trimming Baskets

I am trying to install a 6" round speaker into a 6x8 opening. I already made the MDF adapter plates, but the speaker barely won't fit into the door panel opening by about a 1/16". Would it hurt anything to carefully grind about 1/32" from both top and bottom of the speaker basket to make it fit the door panel? The guy that is helping me with my install thinks it wouldn't hurt the integrity of the speaker. What's your thoughts?

why not grind off 1/32 of the panel thats it isn't clearing instead?

The speaker opening in the door panel is recessed in about 3 1/2" (on top) to where the speaker mounts to the door frame.
