Total newb needs advice - thanks in advance

You can still sound flat and SQ with a ported box you know. If you're looking for a SQ sub that can work in small ported boxes, then look into the Dayton HO. The 10" version works best in .6-.7 cubes ported. 12" version can work in 1.2-1.7 cubes ported. Here's a model graph of the dayton HO 12 sealed vs ported.

Hi

I don't mean to thread-jack but I'm seeking advice on the purchase of an SQ sub. I've combed through this and several other threads. I also made my own thread but am still debating on my subwoofer purchase. I was just wondering if you could shed light on the difference between the Dayton HO you linked and the Titanic MK 4 as they appear to be similar subs. I downloaded and attempted to model said subs in winISD but I was unsuccessful. Would you be able to produce a 4-way graph, showing the frequency curve for both subs, each in an ideal sealed and ported box, if, of course, it's not too much trouble to ask for such a thing? I would be greatly appreciative. I'm looking for a sub that will sound good with (amp)powered entry-level CDT components.

Thanks,

-Mike

Hello Mike,

You should really learn to model on Winisd. It's not very hard to do and you can see more than what I'm going to show you. You can mix and match different size boxes and different tunings just to see what effect it has and base your judgement off of that. Maybe you downloaded the wrong file so here's the download link LinearTeam All you have to do is open up partsexpress website to get the sub specs that the program is asking for and just plug in the numbers. Once set up, you can change various specs that will alter the overall curve to your liking. Nonetheless I modeled it side by side just to show you an idea of what to expect. This will not show how it will sound in the car, but it gives you a very good idea on what to expect from just the box alone. I will be comparing the 12" versions since they are the most common size to put in cars.

As you can see, off the bat the curve is already very similar. The HO achieves the same curve with half the size and even gets a tad bit lower.

Now according to the SPL side of things, the Titanic MK4 will get roughly 3 db louder than the HO especially on the upper notes if comparing the similar curves.

So to conclude I would say it would depend on how much space you are willing to give up. If you want the smallest enclosure possible while still being able to hit all frequencies well, low and up top, then HO is the way to go. If you want something a little louder and willing to give up more space, then the Titanic sub is a good candidate. Notice the resonant frequency of the Titanic is 28.5 hz and HO is 20.9 hz, which means that they have different sweet spots I guess. If you're set on sealed, I think the Titanic will do very well. If you really wanna go ported, then either of them can work for many purposes.. it's just how much space you wanna use. There's always a compromise you can make so actually it can work in smaller enclosures if you like.

My Dayton HO 12 is on its way to me so my next move is enclosure fabrication. Can you confirm that this graph is correct and would you really suggest a box tuned as low as 22 hz? I don't think I've ever seen an enclosure tuned below 29-30 hz. Also, does winISD specify the actual size of the recommended port in sq inches? I'm really looking for someone to help me with the plan for the enclosure, idk if you do that kind of thing. If you charge for such service, or don't do it yourself but know of someone, please shoot me a pm so we can talk. Thanks again for your input.
