Total Installation Noob!

Hi all,

I just purchased a Pioneer double DIN the 8000BT. I also purchased the Pioneer XM module. I went to Circuit City to see how much it would be to install and the quoted $200. I'd like to save the 200 and try and install myself. My car is a 2006 Saturn Vue. Oh I also got the GMOS-LAN06 module to retain the ONSTAR.

I have never installed anything in a car and was wondering if you guys think I could do it. I have basic electrical skills.

What concerns me most is running the power to the XM module. Where do I run the power wire to?

Anyway any help/advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ian

You'll just splice into the factory 12 + line that your HU connects to for the XM module. You'll also need to ground it. You can use the factory ground or pick a bolt on your metal chassis to attach a ring terminal to.

Thanks for the replies! Sorry if this is a stupid question but will it be obvious which color wire is the 12V Line? Is it always a certain color?

Where would I get those connectors for splicing wires? What gauge is the wire i will be working with?

thanks for all the help. I'm a little nervous but excited to do it myself.

thanks

Ian

Check the installation manual that came with all your stuff. That would probably be a good start. If it helps, when I installed my deck it was as easy as matching the wires acording to the colour. Yellow is power, black is ground, and red is ignition.

when you wire up the GM wire harness to the aftermarket deck. splice the XM's unit yellow, to yellow. and black, to black. easy as cake..

the hardest part of this whole process for you is going to be takeing the dash apart and removeing the factory radio..

Yeah, I am nervous about taking the dash off. I don't want to end up breaking it or causing rattles in it. Is it easy to run the wires to the XM module, should I pull the carpet up?

Also I need those screw things to splice the wires right? Do they come in different sizes, do I know to know the wire gauge to buy some?

Sorry for all these beginner questions but I'm determined to do it myself instead of those kids at CC or BestBuy.

If you're worried on how to take your dash apart, you could buy the master data sheet from Crutchfield for your car. For about $5 it will give you detailed instructions on how to remove your factory radio and give you a wiring diagram. It was real easy replacing mine with the instructions. You'll hate yourself if you accidentally break something on your dash, and it isn't cheap to replace.

Oh cool! I didn't know they had that.

On a side note, did I get a good radio? Pioneer FH-P8000BT. I liked how the ipod and bluetooth were already built in. I've heard Pioneer makes good sounding stuff so hopefully this one is the same.

if everything goes well with this install, I plan to change the speakers out. One step at a time though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well I did it!! I'm so proud of myself //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif It was my first install and it went better than I expected. The hardest part was the dash removal. I thought I would never get everything back together again but I did //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif There wasn't much room for all the wires and the Onstar adapter but i finally got everything to fit.

I put int the radio itself and also the satellite tuner. The sound is so much better. I'm really pleased. Plus I saved $200 in installation costs.

Thanks to everyone who responded, you gave me the confidence to do it.

Ian
