Agreed there. Ive tried plenty of different cones over the years, and seem to keep going back to "paper" . Although there have been plenty of advancements in paper formulations used in the past decade... we use plenty of carbon fibers in the pulp... strengthens things more than simply kraft alone.
While many of the higher tech cones are lighter weight and have much higher static strength... the dynamic abuse that a sub goes through (especially in SPL applications) simply pushes them far beyond what they can take in cyclical loading. I have had kevlar and carbon cones (with both foam core and nomex honey comb core from different manufacturers) turn to mush around the neck joint. Even with ridiculous amounts of reinforcement, they still didnt hold up as well as our standard cones. Im sure there will be a point in the next couple of years where they will be able to take the power reliably... but not right now and they arent worth the 3-5 times extra cost for the weight savings... and durability loss. (At least not for us).
But you better believe that as soon as we can find a composite or metal cone that is stronger than our paper cones, and saves us a good deal of weight... that we will be all over that one //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
