to fix or not to fix....

So I was helping my mawmaw put some things out for trash and I can upon a lcd tv. Its a symphonic 32" that was struck by lightning not even a year ago and she never through it out. She told me I could have it if I wanted. I'd like to try and fix it. Hopefully just the power supply was fried. Anyone have experience with lightning victim tvs?

shit, that would be a **** good deal if you can get it fixed......i'd open 'er up and see what looks to be fried. then go to a used electronics store and see if they have any parts to fix it

I may open it up tonight and take a gander. I found a service center not far from my house for them so I may go ask to see what they would charge. It would def be a sweet deal to get it fixed.

Flyback transformer is shot. Throw it out.

EDIT: NM, you said LCD. I read too quickly. LCD won't be using a flyback. Should be just a mains transformer. If that's the case, should be an easy fix.

sweet!! So I pulled it apart and the first thing I noticed was a fuse right where the power cord attaches to the board. Instinct was to pull the fuse and check it. Sure enough it was blown and there were no signs of anything else damaged on the board. So I went and got some tin foil wrapped the fuse and stuck it back in. Hooked it up to my power strip and let her rip.......well she powered right up with no issues! I left it on for a lil bit and no signs of smoke and picture looks fine. Ill be going to the store tomorrow to get a fuse and run tests on it.

It lucked out unlike everything else in the house....Im gonna take apart the other tv and see if I can get it working too. Its a 20" lcd with dvd player in it.
