Ticking noise and half of car no sound.

*If this is in the wrong section let me know*

Alright, so I just bought an 03 Tiburon V6.

Basically the issue is that there is a ticking noise coming from the tweeter speaker on the passenger side, and there is only sound coming from the driver side front and back.

Here's the fine details:

I do not have a stock head unit, but the speakers and sub are all stock (infinity).

Whoever owned the car before me ran a cable for a speaker in the trunk.

So there are two blue cables in the back, one with the red and white audio plugs like on a tv, and a speaker cable that splits into two metal ends, which have electrical tape on them because there is no speaker.

Now as soon as I turn the stereo on I start to here a constant ticking noise from the passenger tweeter, and there is no audio coming from that half of the car.

Even if I go into the settings and change the balance all the way to the right side of the car, no audio comes out of anywhere.

Now here is where I think it gets weird.

The ticking is normally on the passenger side, but it has randomly switched to the driver side for a brief while, and the last time I was in the car it happened on both sides for a few seconds. But it is normally just the passenger side.

It does NOT get louder as I turn the volume up, so I can't hear it when I turn the music up to a decent level (I like it fairly loud).

But I have noticed it seemed to get a little louder as I accelerated from like 40-60? or maybe it was 60-80? I don't remember. But not that much louder.

It did go away for an hour or so last night, and started again today. (Still no audio on the passenger side though)

I have not taken anything apart, me and my dad are going to take a look at it but would like some advice on where to start and what it probably is?

The ticking could be unrelated to the fact there is no sound on the right side!

Any ideas will help.

well it sounds like you have a shorted speaker, and the most likely place for that to happen is where those blue RCA cables in the

back connect to one side of a box (hi to low voltage converter) and the other side has wires that tap into the factory speaker wires.

so u have to find that box (probably behind the radio) and check those connections.

Because there is only one place within 30 minutes and they aren't good at what they do and overcharge.

If it's something as simple as I need to disconnect that open line, or hook something up to it, because it's drawing power from the amp constantly that's not going anywhere, or the circuit or whatever needs to be complete, I'm not paying some guy 100 dollars to do that for me.

The blue RCA cables and the extra speaker cables in the back aren't actually hooked into anything. (and are the only thing not stock in the way it's wired)

Unless you mean the other side? but I'm assuming they are just wired to the amp.

If one speaker is shorted somewhere it would make half the car, 3+ speakers, just not play?

So you're suggesting to just pull the dash and look at the head unit and such and just make sure everything is hooked up okay? (and I should probably just disconnect the extra blue cable)

the blue cables are RCAs they carry the audio signal and the get it from the other side where they connect to the Box, which is probably behind your radio

u need to find that box and check the connections. if u decide to disconnect the blue wires...disconnect the box from your factory wires too.

yes one shorted speaker will shut down one side or the entire amplifier..... depends on the design

Alright, I'll take a look and make sure all the connections are good.

I hope it's just something simple with the connections/wiring.

The fact that the ticking goes away for long periods, and randomly happened on my driver side where the sound comes from, makes me feel like it's probably just wiring somewhere being screwy.

But again, I have no idea. I'll post again later with what I find. And thank you!

good luck. other than that, if you don' have a multimeter, a good understanding of electricity, and love puzzles, your going to have to pay someone who does.

and thats where us installers come in.

Where in NY are you?. If your somewhat close I might be able to take some time to meet up with you and help ya figure it out if you arent able to.

possible that the previous owner put it back to stock, including the head unit. if wires were tapped into or disconnected,a dn re-connected, there may lie the problem. if an aftermarket head unit was run through a factory amp, it may be damaged. and, then there is always the fuse. look for one in more than one place. it may be loacted in the engine compartment, or even stuffed behind the glove box, not just the regular fuse pannel.

Alright, so I feel like a bit of an ***.

But I've never had a stereo with an AUX in.

Today on my way home I decided to throw a CD in for kicks, and guess what?

All my speakers worked.

So then I put the radio on.. all my speakers worked.

So I figured out that part of the issue, they have an AUX cable running from the back of the head unit.

I'm guessing the cable isn't the right cable, I'm going to order the cable with 4 ends or whatever.

(All these issues were because I was using my iPhone with the AUX cable.)

So the only problem left is the constant ticking that randomly switches speakers.

It also intensifys when I speed up at times.

Does it sound like it could just be feedback from the open cable in the trunk? (that has electrical tape on it)

I can unhook that blue cable, or if the RCA red and white, and the two open wires are all I need for a sub.. I'll just buy a sub? =P

Sounds like a good excuse to get one.

But really thank you for everyones help so far!
