Thoughts about tuning

So I've been building a new box for a fully loaded Fi BL 15

I purchased 3-4in precision ports from parts express. They come at a factory length of 17in. With 3 of them mounted in this box at factory length, that gives me a tuning of 36hz. Is that to high? I've always tuned my boxes to 33hz, but that would mean I'd have to go buy 6 ft of thin wall pvc and cut it to 21in pieces in order to get 33hz, which is a lot of hassle with the closest store being a 1 hour round trip. But, in every ones opinion, is it worth is to get 3hz lower tuning?

Meh I usually tune low to get less of a peaky SPL response...and because I love the low end

Go down to 30hz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

depends what oyu want...daily pounder, or for comps too?
It'll be used daily, but it may see the occasional 139.9 bass race, and if its clean enough, maybe even 149.9 bass race. But I do like the lows. Ideal would be that it plays loud and clear down to almost 20hz

I just did the calculating on the port length and the lowest tuning possible is 31hz, which is limited by box size. I think I'm gonna go with 33hz. Thats what Fi wants it to be and the box is built in a way that 3-4in ports at 33hz would make a net cu.ft. of 4 exactly, which is as big as you can go with a single BL 15 without getting nasty sounding slap. So 33hz it is. Time to go get some 4in thin wall pvc!

33 hz will be good for daily. Just //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif Steve M. did 31 hz (I think) in his Tahoe, just for comparison.
When I made of the plans for the box, the original set up was to get exactly 4.0cu.ft. at 33hz because Fi says that that is the "perfect" box. And this box is built to fit into pretty much any car so it will hopefully be the last one I build for this particular sub. Now, for my next post!

i doubt youll be able to bass race 149.9 with that setup man...

I agree. But without knowing the acoustics of this van I've acquired recently, I'm not sure what it will put out. I will def be in the 140's. It was doing that in my old 88 Grand Marquis with it in the trunk. So yes, 149.9 would be extremely rare in this setup, but achievable. Will I do it? Probably not. But I always hope for the best!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

you wont achieve a 149.9 with one 15 bl...
especially tuned low for music
You're right. I didn't build a fart box, I built a SQ box that capable making some pressure. So, fair enough, I'll settle for 145.3 at 33hz.

Thats just a guess!

that would be a very good score for your 15 my man. I dont mean to be a downer on you or nothing, just trying to be realistic.

Good luck and keep us posted
