Um.. im kinda limited to how I can word this but..

You dont necessaraly need to go to the store to buy windows xp, with bit-torrent and a CD burner anything is possible.

My original OEM install disk would not work after I upgraded my motherboard so I had to resort to other methods of getting an installation disk for win xp.

here is a couple pictures to show what I mean.

You have already paid for the operating system, you just cant use it anymore for technical reasons, the steps you take to fix that are completely justified.

You may not need to reinstall the operating system though, some people have replaced their mother boards plugged in the hard drive and off they went, I cant say youll be as lucky and suggest you have a backup plan on a cd.

(The xp pro editions fit on a single cd-r)

hey stones, this is my laptop. how hard would it be to make it play C&C? The thing get hot real quick and crashes after 5 minutes when I tried to play it, so I uninstalled it.
Unfortunately laptops are an "as is" kind of thing, there not modular like a regular PC so upgrading the graphics card and processor are not really options.

As for cooling there are some solutions, laptop pads can be purchased to help keep the temps down they are not very expensive and may stop the laptop from going into thermal protect.

If your gonna shell out the cash, avoid an HP computer at all costs and just get something that kicks *** out of the box.

If you get that used sytem for 200 bucks you stiil need to shell out another 300 bucks to get the nessesary upgrades, and its no better to start with than your existing computer so avoid it, not that the sellers a bad guy its just not the stuff you need.

If you buy an old OEM system you wont be much better off than you are now as you will need to upgrade everything in the near future to run todays applications, if you can afford it just spend the money once and get the best you can in the first go.

This I recommend, its a good price for everything it offers.

Its ready to go Operating sytem/ PCI express graphics card/1gig 3200 memory/ DUAL CORE 2.66Ghz processor(faster than a regular 2,66ghz) all included.

This is another option, its cheaper but very fast as well, it is also very easy to upgrade the graphics and power supply on this one as the case is of standard size and the processor and ram are plenty fast already.

That second one is under 500

The only problem with upgrading your existing comp is that you will need to dremel the rear of the case to fit the power supply (The one you showed me has the same size case as well), getting a new operating system (free!) on there is easy if you know how.
