especially old ones. But im curious as to why you automatically ruled out the motherboard as being an issue?

Because.... if the mobo was bad, then a LOT more things would go wrong. My bro's PC once had some crap going on where it wouldnt load into windows, I replaced the IDE cables and it worked FINE after that.... Im just saying IF it was the mobo A LOT More things would be happening...
