An Indiana woman charged with hiding shoplifted goods in her motorized wheelchair fled a hospital on foot a few hours later.
Jacqueline Ward was charged with misdemeanor shoplifting.
"She turned a misdemeanor into a felony by getting out of that wheelchair and fleeing," Police Lt. Leo Finnerty told the Gary (Ind.) Post-Tribune.
Ward, a Gary resident, and her daughter were arrested at the Value City Department Store in Hobart. A store security guard stopped them as they left and allegedly found $206 worth of items, including jewelry, a pocketbook and shoes, stuffed under the wheelchair seat.
After her arrest, Ward complained that she was feeling sick and was taken to a hospital for tests. When a police officer went to the hospital to take her into custody, he found her gone.
