I casually skimmed through, but it sounds to me like John recommended using a ground plane measurement style, which is one of the only appropriate methods for a subwoofer due to the bandwidth it covers and the size of the wavelength we're working with in a home. The home gives us a chance to control the environment, but we must also eliminate the environment's boundary effects to understand the speaker better.
