I picked up a 12" piece (they gave me 16" though? meh cool place..) for $1.59 after tax

looks like a chinese finger trap. You could do that with like 5 strands of 12awg and get your sister to french braid them. Seriously a waste of money. I think you are missing the whole point of using big wire. Its just s bunch of small strands braided together. You could do that yourself.
