Haha, very true. A lot of people didn't / don't realize that they are design patents and it takes (IIRC) a 10% change to completely get around a design patent. As you stated, a small change to the design can get you past any legal action.

I have my little list of who I would like to see get the patents, but in all honesty it will probably be the build house that has the tooling that ends up with the patent rights. From their standpoint, why not buy the patent? They already have the tooling and if they buy the patent they can make it an open tool so everyone can use it. Imagine what their sales on that basket would do! Releasing a basket with THAT much clearance as an open tool would be like releasing a mildly deranged ape into small town suburbia.

Unless, as you stated, it's a 7 year patent and the patent is about to expire.

From what was shown at SBN, PowerBass has out a basket that's nearly (or exactly) identicle that they're using on their big-boy SPL drivers.
