super sub regular sub?

mine avaitar is above uber //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif ( in the since that the TC-3hp was literally the "uberwoofer", and i have there on the left a TC4HP :p)

To label things like the Type R and Kicker L7 as "regular" woofers puts them and subs like them in the same league as your run of the mill subs by Sony, Pyle, Legacy, and Pyramid woofers. That's not a fair comparison at all. Since "regular" is defined as "in accordance with fixed order or procedure or principle" the word isn't really fitting. "Average" is a much better term.

In fact, the whole system is foobar. I propose a new system with absolute definitions based on abstracts:

Sub Average (Cheap)

Cheap subwoofers will not perform as well as what is considered generally appropriate based their given specifications, cost, and initial expectations. Cheap woofers feature a very lost cost and very low build quality. Many fail unexpectedly in use.

Examples: Pyle, Legacy, Sony, Durabrand

Average (Regular)

Regular woofers will perform in a manner considered generally appropriate by their given specifications, cost, and initial expectations. Regular woofers can handle an average 1.5X of their rated power based on install. Regular woofers occasionally fail unexpectedly in use. Occasionally a regular woofer is hyped blurring it's tier between Sub Average and Above Average (Good).

Examples: Kicker Comp, Dayton Reference, Audiobahn

Above Average (Good)

Good woofers perform better than what is considered generally appropriate by their given specifications, cost, and initial expectations. Good woofers can handle an average excess of two to three times their rated power in certain installs. Good woofers rarely fail during use, but it does happen. A hyped Regular woofer or unpopular Super woofer can be considered a Good woofer for temporary periods.

Examples: IA 187, Alpine Type R, Mach 5 MAW, Aura RPM

Adept (Super)

Super woofers perfom well beyond what is initially expected of them. Super woofers are the speakers of choice in high end daily driver installs and many competitions. Super woofers take an average of 3 to 4 times their rated power in certain installs. The chance of a Super woofer failing during use is very rare outside of competitions.

Examples: IA Lethal Injection, Stereo Integrity BM, Alpine Type X

Exceptional (Uber)

Uber woofers are classified when a hyped Super woofer performs better than the exaggerated expectations given to it. Uber woofers tend to hold SPL / SQ records and unique defining traits in throw, motor types, and acceptable enclosures. Uber woofers almost never fail unless acted upon by outside forces like water or physical damage, and specific numbers about power handling are often unnecessary. Uber woofers generally cost significantly more than lesser tiers thanks to the lack of compromise in their design. A hyped Super woofer can temporarily be a lesser Uber woofer.

Examples: Stereo Integrity Mag, Aura MR, Fi BTL
IMO woofers like the Jackhammer and RE XXX shouldn't make it into the Uber Woofer category because of their cost. If you're putting $2000 or more into a woofer, you're going to expect the world of it.

Regular: Type R, L7
Super: TC3000, Mag, W7, Ava

Uber: LMS5400, TC5200, 2006 XXX

imo
this is a perfect example of sub classifications. Uber subs have extreme xmax 34mm++..Super subs have an xmax between 34-20mm. and regular subs have less. That doesn't mean that a regular sub can get as loud as a Uber sub, it'll just have more distortion at the higher spl levels. This is imho from observations from this forum and many others.

p.s. W7 is definately considered a Uber woofer

These speculations are either going to spark a debate about whether Sub X, Y, and Z deserve to be Uber subs, or invoke an absolute system of tiers.

Xmax should just be a side effect of the build quality. If you build a sub around Xmax you're just wasting valuable R&D that could otherwise be put into make a good woofer that just happens to have a long throw.

And **** it all, stop labelling the Mag as a merely a super sub, just look at the latest MECA UK scores.
