Sundown X, technical question about output, cone area/excursion

It's commonly said as 1/2 or 1/3. I've seen both of them thrown out there but not much else. I'm assuming the did tests to come to that approx value. All suspensions have some nonlinear component they add to output but it's generally not audible if it's a good surround. At low excursion levels it is exta cone area though. Main takeaway herr is correct.. a bigger surround doesn't generally do much either way for cone area but can help xmax.

I just wouldn't consider the surround as SD. simply because your not getting a linear stroke and they are usually too soft. sure they may displace some air its going to be so minute I wouldn't be concerned. the increased xmax per cone area will make up for it. in the v4 case Jacob said its about 10% less SD so your looking at 65in^2 instead of 72.

1mm more xmax will make up for that!

its just not solid surface area nor is it linear.. Id simply measure the cone itself. now yes it does increase MMS ETC... but that's a different story.. if it was up to me Id use a rubber surround or a softer more linear foam surround.. the rubber surrounds are great s long as they don't completely collapse..

then again i use different methods of testing anyways so..
