I have recently installed the amp in my girlfriends car and the previous owner already had wires ran for a system. the ground was not all that great but i used it for a while. The amp will go into protect after about 10 mins every time we turn it on. It gets very very hot. I thought it was the ground so i changed to a new one and still the same problem. I did not check the ground for resistance yet.

i measured the voltage at the amp and it shows 14 volts the entire time. I also disconnected the subwoofer and it still goes into protection after a few minutes of being on. I also moved to a known good ground on the car and same issue.

Sub is a dual 2 ohm T5 tarantula

amp use to work great in my civic about a year or so ago

any suggestions on why it does this?

Sounds like you got an amp problem. You should take it to a local stereo shop and have it tested. Just as one last test, disconnect the rca's from the amp and see if it still goes into protection.

It depends entirely on the length of the run and the amount of current you are drawing. There's a reason a 1500-watt heater doesn't use a 0/1 gauge power cable. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Long story short, as long as you're not running more than 12-feet of 4 gauge at 1000-watts, you'll be fine. If you're going over 12-feet, I would upgrade to 0/1 or 2 gauge depending on the length.

If you disconnected your speaker wires and the amp still went into protect, chances are the amp is blown unless you have your gains maxed out or you have another short in your wiring. Try powering on the amp with nothing attached to it (no RCA's, speaker wires). If it still goes into protect, your amp definitely needs repair.

I may try to run a separate ground from the battery just to test if it is that before doing anything. I haven't checked the ground with a multimeter yet though. I kind of cant remember how to check for resistance.

just hooked up my saz1500v2 played good for about 24 hours and then started going into protection....wasnt even getting hot....stopped playing all together then saw smoke from the amplifier
