Suggestions for single cab truck

Thanks for the great information!! A cut through just wouldn't be possible for me. Too much money, and I don't want to lose any space in my truck bed.
What all retail stores that you know of carry RE8's? I can't seem to find any retail store locators on their website.

Alan
You have to actually call Resonant Engineering at: (702) 896 4823 or email them at: sales@respl.com

There is also a website called http://www.visionaryaudio.com that sells RE equipment also...I'd go through Resonant Engineering to be safe and get the warranty though.

And these could fit in a box so that I wouldn't lose any leg room?

What is a good (but cheap) amp I could get that could power these?

Sorry, I'm a newbie at this and I have lots of questions!

1.) That is something you have to determine based on the amount of space you have behind your seats. I've seen many single cab rangers get away with single 10's and even single 12's barely losing any legroom...a silverado is bigger than a ranger but I'm not quite sure how many cubic feet you are looking at...before you buy a sub (or subs) I'd measure behind your seats with you seat positioned like how you would drive, subtract the space taken up by the mdf, subtract the bracing that would be inside the box (estimate), subtract space that would probably be taken up by the sub (subs)(usually around 0.15+^3 for a decent 12), then with that start matching up what subs fit the space you have. It is a hell of a lot of math and preplanning but if you do it right once then you will never have to do it again...DON'T RUSH. Also take into consideration that if you use multiple subs you might want to chamber them (give each sub it's own sectioned off airspace) so if one sub dies you don't damage the remaining subs...chambering off subs will requre more MDF and offer you less airspace but will give you more peace of mind and safety for your investment.

Here is a good topic about a guy that installed a 12" sub into his regular cab ranger...his truck is smaller than yours so you might be able to fit more but it will give you an idea of what is needed...

2.) A good amp for you situation really depends on what sub you plan to go with. There are several good companies that can offer you what you need...some of them are:

Phoenix Gold

Hifonics

JL

Memphis

Sony (J/K... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wacky.gif.cf4a48f9e6dfe9504ffd2c946fd2f340.gif )

If you go with a single ten w/ 4ohm DVC, a single 12 w/ 4ohm DVC, or 4 8's with 4ohm DVC than I'd go with the 16-MC500D from Memphis. It puts out 500watts at 2ohms...it might not give you an earth rattling blow you ears out of you *** sound but it's fairly cheap ($200), **** reliable, and enough to push most of what you'll throw at it. Check out ebay for cheap prices or go to a Memphis retail store and pay a lot of $$$$$$.

When you hear someone mention a brand that looks good I'd do a search on this board, read some reviews, and check out the prices on an amp that would match up to your subs...

I'll help you out some more if you find out your available airspace behind your seats...so get measuring!

I had a '93 single cab silverado back in the day. I played around with many different systems in it. I had two twelves in a sealed box (approx. 3 cu. ft. ), 2 10s in a sealed box, and 2 10s in a ported box. I didn't lose any leg room with any of them, but with the 2 10s in the sealed box with the amp mounted in the box between them, I could move my seat all the way back.

I just went to a local stereo installer, and asked them for a quote on a sub package. I basically told him I wanted something that wasn't too expensive but sounded good, and I wasn't looking for something to be really loud.

I asked him about the RE8's, and he said he had never heard of them, but they could install it for $47.50 + $39.50 for the amp kit.

He priced these packages for me:

My choice of amp -- approx. $149

2 10" JL Subs -- $99 each

Custom box -- ~$170

Installation -- $47.50

Amp Kit -- $39.50

Total: $612

My choice of amp -- approx. $149

2 10" Quantum Subs -- ~$78 each

Premade box -- $99

Installation -- $47.50

Amp Kit -- $39.50

Total: $492

What do you guys think about this? I thought I would post here because you guys know more about this stuff than I do (for now!!), and I don't want anyone to try and rip me off.

i would definitely build my own box....i paid that much for a box too and it aint fun...i also have a reg cab silverado and u can get a little over 2 cu.ft. without losingg the fold up center seat......i am thinking of gettin 2 kicker compvr 12" or the 4 re8's....cant decide

Just because of the guy I am and how picky I am I would probably get all the equipment I wanted in my truck (including amp, subs, distribution blocks) from different stores or off of Ebay. If I were you I'd take some time researching your system a bit, go to several stores around you area and check out the prices on amps and subs YOU want...not what he is willing to give you...once you have everything together I'd give it to him and ask him to build that custom box for $170 and wire/install it for $100...You can get much nicer stuff off of ebay for those prices you listed than what that guy is going to give you. Just my opinion...but if your system really isn't that big of a deal to you than letting this guy stick whatever he feels best into your truck might be a less stressful way out.

As far as this setup goes:

1.) What retail amp do you plan on getting for $150...check into the RMS wattage ratings and see if it seems like it'll give you the sound and volume you are looking for...100watts x 2 may not cut it for you.

2.) What 2 10" JL subs does he plan on getting you? You could probably order two RE10's for less than $200 shipped and get a better, more full sound.

My choice of amp -- approx. $1492 10" Quantum Subs -- ~$78 each

Premade box -- $99

Installation -- $47.50

Amp Kit -- $39.50

Definately go with the first system if anything...the second system will be something you'll get bored with real fast...that choice would be a classic case of wasting $$$ buying many times rather than once for something that you really want.

I probably don't know that much more than you do about car audio but I look around on different forums and around the internet to see what interests me and looks like the best setup. Posting on this forum was a good idea to get some information but look into what you are about to buy...I wouldn't let a guy pressure you into making a decision you really aren't sure about...

I don't think that this guy is ripping you off but I don't think you are getting the most out of your money. For $600 you could have one really decent setup if you are willing to search the internet for deals and how to build your own box. If you are willing to pay this guy to make your own box and install it than you would still have about $400 to spend on whatever you wanted...and in that case I would buy the following:

Resonant Engineering RE10 sub (x2) @ $60 each

Memphis 16-MC500D 500watts @ 2ohms (x1) @ $209 (ebay)

SubTotal: $329

Shipping: $75 (for all three)

Tax: 8.5% (depending on where you live)

Total: About $406

add in custom box built by the shop + wiring kit + installation = $257

Grand Total: $663 with everything factored in...

If you want to choose your own setup then I would go back to that shop and ask him if he would build you a box and install everything if you brought the amp and subs to him...he should do it...

Just my opinion! :thumbsup

Which would sound better, 4 RE 8's or 2 RE 10's? What kind of amp would it take to power them?

I may be looking at doing this sometime this summer. Right now I think I'm going to get lojack installed...someone I know just got their truck stolen where I'm probably about to start working.

The 4 8"s would most likely be louder(more cone area and total power handling). As for power, get something that puts out around 150-200 RMS a sub at ohms. So a mono amp that puts out 600-800 RMS @ 2 ohms.

Hey man, looking for the leg room? Try this: make your sub enclosure with 2 10" Comp VR's ( I did ). Then put both amps ( sub and surround ) on the roof of the cab. Saved me LOTS and LOTS of leg room. I am 6'2" and drive a Ranger Regular cab. I got the idea from a friend of mine who drives a silerado regular cab. He put 3 Comp VR 12" in his.

Just an idea. Take it or leave it.
