Suggestions for lightweight, powerful amp.....

I really want to save some weight in my new car. I want one amp to power 1 sub and a pair of comps. I want it light as I can get it but still do a good job. Also will need a sub that I want to be as light as possible and not sound like ***. I'm not concerned with spl. I do a lot of driving and just want it to sound good without weighing down my mazda3 hatch. I just pulled everything out of my crx to sell but that stuff was so heavy I don't want to re-use. If you have a suggestion, for the amp and what to use with it, let me know. I'm also looking at HU's but it has to have an orange glow to match the rest of the car. Not sure what my choices are there either.

Sounds like a good four channel will be your best option. Something that is around 75 or 100x4 would work. Bridge two channels for the sub and use the other two for your comps. A built in crossover will save added components and wiring. As far as weight goes, lighter is usually not better per watt. Just check out some quality four channels and make your decision based on which features/price/weight work best for you.

agree with you and i;m talking in terms of the whole system. Two RE SE's and the box it took to hold them along with the 2 MB Quart amps I was using in my car was makng it slower

IMO i doubt a amp that weighs 8lbs vs. an amp that weighs 20 pounds will make your car slower, get a good well built amp over some p.o.s. cheap " light" amp

Do you plan on racing or what? If you're so concerned about weight why even have anything in the car? A passanger seat must weith about 20 pounds. and your windows like 10 pounds a piece... DOOD just strip it down, make it go ZOOM!!!2

In all honesty, if you want a good sounding stereo you need to sacrifice some things: weight/space.

A hundred or so lbs won't be that big of an effect imo. Just lose that gut and take your losses fatty..

lol jk

Thanks for the advice. Still though, I believe if I can shave off weight where I can, that in the end, it should add up to a noticable difference. In my CRX, I put in 2 heavy amps, Two 12 RE SE's and I could tell a huge difference in performance and gas mileage. Now, granted the CRX was grossly underpowered to start with. I'd just feel better doing what I can to keep it light as possible. I don;t need spl that shatters windows so why over-do it?

Definetly go for a fiberglass sub box then. that will save substantial weight over mdf. Maybe an adire shiva for a sub? Not too beefy, but performs well from what I've heard, or even an older atlas. One the amp, no clue, I've never really noticed manufactuers weights. A four channel with a built in crossover will be the ticket though, that will be the most weight efficient setup by far.

I am in the same position as you bud.

I want good sounds but did not want my set up to way much more than factory. + I invested a lot of $$$ in light weight products in other places in the vehicle, I didnt want to throw all that out the window with sound equipment that weighed a ton!

Thats why I chose the 15lb jl 10w6v2 over the 30lb 10w7. I am probably going to get Genesis amps for the sub and front stage. The two Genesis amps COMBINED weigh in at a feathery 8 lbs! Thats less then my factory amp!

Thanks, Asgar
