Suggestions for a small and simple rear deck mount sub?

Hi all,

I've got a UK Escort saloon/sedan with a sealed boot/trunk, apart from the pair of OE 5x7" speakers on the rear shelf/deck (which is metal/structural).

I want to have some kind of sub in the car. I am happy to lose the 5x7's so I am considering making a low-profile enclosure to bolt to the underside of the deck and vent through the OE speaker holes in the deck?

Another option may be, if they exist, to use a pair of 5x7 subs in the rear deck with a suitable enclosure around them.. I have looked at passive radiators and stuff but i'm not sure they'd help me here.

I can't have anything too big, or something that'll hang down too low as I do need the boot space.

So basically what are my options when all I have is a (fairly) sealed boot space with two 5x7-sized holes to the cabin?

Many thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I've been having a search around. I've not heard of this brand before, Tang Band, but they seem to sell a range of 6x9 woofers. Inparticular the W69-1436 - any thoughts on me using a pair of these under the rear deck with a suitable enclosure? Or would a pair of 5-6" be better than the oval design.

Ok well i've bit the bullet and purchased a pair of Tang Band w69-1436's which I will put in a slimline box bolted and sealed to the underside of the deck, with the subs working through the OE speaker holes on the deck.

Fingers crossed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

A friend of mine did exactly what you are saying. It worked out well for him. It wasn't a street beater, but music sounded real nice, and he kept his trunk space. He always had baseball equipment rolling around, so enclosed woofers were a must.

Hm well I had a look at this again today. It seems like I won't be using the TB speakers I bought //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

They're nowhere near 6x9 when it comes to mounting and fitting and neither fit my 5x7-6x9 adapters and certainly won't mount into the original space on the deck..

Oh well, they'll be up for sale soon //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

So that makes me wonder if perhaps I should just put a 10" sub in a small box in the boot/trunk and remove the rear deck speakers to allow the SP through.. but then what do I do about rear fill!?

Why not rebuild the rear deck (use MDF) and mount a 10” sub free air in the trunk you could even remount the 5x7s back in

Would work better than some 5x7 or 6x9 so called woofers

I would, but I really want the rear shelf to look OEM. I know that's not super practical in the world of the serious ICE enthusiast, but i'm trying to reach a compromise with my install.

I am quickly becoming the victim of my own anal retention! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

Pioneer makes a shallow mount sub you could use, its like 4 inches thick i think. All you have to do is save the carpet cover noting where it notches in and leave that area stock, make sure that when the subs are mounted they wont get in the way of the carpet thing then put it back over the subs and whala

Yeah, I'd suggest you go with an infinite baffle design. It's small, simple, and you can use those 5x7" holes to your advantage.

This site shows you some designs, I'm most likely putting an IB install in my car that'll be similar to the one on the bottom of that page.

Yeah I did look over that site, it's well and truly book-marked!

I guess I could bolt a plank of MDF under the rear deck and mount some subs on it, but would I be limited to 5" diameter ones? I know TB do some high-excursion 5" subs, but I think they'd get lost in a fairly large boot space? Their parameters make them want a tiny box!

Mount some MDF under the 5x7" holes and put a 4" hole in the middle, make a box like the one in the bottom of the page (like the one I'll probably make, so it's like a small box for your subs) and mount it against the MDF under your 5x7" with the 4" continuing into your box. Put some 4" PVC pipe to connect them, keeping it as short as possible otherwise it'll just be a box vented into your cabin which you don't want.

Yes but you're missing the point of my original post.. "low-profile enclosure".. I don't want something that's going to take up loads of space.

I'm starting to wonder now if the best bet is just to remove the rear 5x7's and throw a generic box in the boot and remove it whenever I need the space //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
