hey i currently have my fronts (infinity perfect components) x-over at 50 hz. cuz they go this low without distorting. i also have my sub set at 50hz. i set crossover points using a DMM. should i raise the point on the HPF or lower the point on the LPF?

i don't think anyone asked but what kind of wattage are you running for everything. it'll surely be impossible if you don't have enough for your fronts to keep up with a sub.

I wouldnt go lower than 50hz to your sub. May need more wattage to the fronts or turn the gain down of the sub amp.

i make my test tones using sony soundforge. i'm sure if u did some searching on Google youll find plenty of test tones. if you cant find any ill be sure to upload one for you when i get home from work.

I agree with whats been said about the crossover points. And imo 80hz is too high to acheive 'up front bass' most times. If you are concerned about a hole in your response, see if a local shop has an RTA you can use while playing with your xover settings. Also, squeak is right, interior panels rattling in the rear really localizes the bass. Ive been surprised more than once how much of an improvement it made deadening the plastic interior panels.

your x over points being too high has alot more with rattles than the 80-100 hz x over point although i wont argue the FACT the higher the playing freq the more directional it gets. about 200 hz (iirc) is where we can start picking up a real direction.

the slope of the x over plays in most cases a bigger role than the actual point if you are setting them up is between 50-100 hz.

Try reversing the polarity on the sub...... It may just be that your phases are off and its not "blending" well with the front stage. If you reverse the plolarity it MIGHT put the sub in phase with your frontstage therefore bringing the sound forward.
