Subwoofer requiring ported box?

i have been experiencing problems with a Earthquake Subzero-12 subwoofer. 1000rms/2000max was hooked up to a Orion 1200D amp. Recently burned another voice coil and the sub/amp burned my fingers at the touch. box i slightly larger than specs, sealed. i heard some subs only work in ported box. plenty of power 0/1 gauge, battery in back + cap. anyone know what might be wrong before i do my upgrade??

no indiciation at all.. just went out and smelt the voicecoil.. the rim of the subwoofer was so hot that it left a welt on my hand.. too much power from amp to sub?

oh, oh, can i answer this. all the way up with the bass boost on the HU all the way up.

no, amp: 75%, HU: 50%.. had to adjust HU because the output was not right.
