Subwoofer made popping noise and now doesn't work

Hey guys,

I need some help diagnosing a problem. My system is the following:

Subwoofer: Alpine type-R (500W)

Amp: Rockford fosgate punch p400-2 (400W bridged at 4 ohms)

HU: alpine CDA-9856 (18 watts)

My system was installed by a friend and was running fine for about 6 months. Then it started to make this popping noise and then stop working. It would come back on every now and then, but then the popping would occur again and the system would stop working. Now the system doesn't even work at all. There is still occasional popping, but it is definetly not working. I moved cities and am no longer near the friend who installed it so im pretty much on my own. He said it might be a problem with the ground wire. I checked all the connections and they all seem to be good. ANy ideas on what could be going on?

I would start by taking out the speaker and checking the resistance of the coils with a DMM. If its measurement is crazy then you have a blown speaker in need of replacement/recone. If the resistance checks out ok I would then recheck your wiring.

I would have to say the amp..... cause I believe you bought a dual 4 ohm Type R and he wired it to 2 ohms... and now it is shitting the bed...

OR.. your amp is just messed up...

Or if you think the sub is messed up... hook up a DMM to your subs terminals and see where the ohms sit at...

go to the OHMS sign on a DMM (digital multi meter) hook up postive to postiive and negative to negative from the leads on the dmm to the sub and see what it says...

im gonna say either a bad connection (sounds like you checked that), or you toasted the amp.

That type-R can take a lot more power than the amp has to offer, so im gonna guess you had the gain knob all the way up, not realizing the gain is set by voltage, not as a volume knob.

I'm unfamiliar with Type R's and their coil config, but if that's the case RE_XXX is correct in checking out the amplifier.

edit- Supergumby got in here before me too.

I believe this is the case... cause subs just dont pop... and pop... and later pop.... usually when a sub pops once... its done for....

But an amp is different... itll pop and pop then pop and give weird signals then after a short time.... its out for the count....

Even if your green/power light is on, on the amp.... it could still be fried... sounds like mosfets in the amp to me... thats usually the first things to go
