Subwoofer Longevity?

My last one lived for at least 5 years that I had it, I bought it used. and I beat the shit out of that thing and smelled coils on it more then I should of. In the end I think it died from bottoming it out too much //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif A bottom coil winding started to come off the former and was rubbing making a hell of a sound, so I too it out of the box and free air burped test tones.

assuming you power it within its limits and don't listen at full volume all the time...

The biggest factor IMO is environmental conditions.

When I was in HS I bought two pyramid 10's - one went in a hatchback for a couple years, then the rear deck of a coupe (UV exposure). The other went in a trunk, then an SUV. The one in the hatchback deteriorated a lot faster, it was basically useless after 3 yrs or so. The one in the SUV just wore out this year (surround decay) - it lasted about twice as long.

Something as good as JL should last several years even if it IS abused IMO. If you take care of it - 10 yrs+?

if you never use it, itll last forever //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
Not nescesarly Just hooked my 12 w3v2 had a couple hours play time and was sitting in my closet worked when I put it there now two years later only one voice coil plays //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif Stuck using my w3v1 12s for now

It wouldn't be amazing if a sub that was taken care of lastet 5 or more years. They don't really "wear" other than the spider softening up over time but that will not kill the driver. Properly used the surround, cone, v/c could last a lifetime. Short of losing it's magnetism, a motor can't really go bad.

In all seriousness, probably a year, I don't know.

A year?? All of my equip't looks mint and operates flawlessly after only a year. There is no way I would spend money on this hobby if that was all I could expect.

Like others, I expect to change just for the sake of changing well before the equip't goes bad.

I have a set of old CV 12"s that will be 14 years old in Jan 08'. They play perfect. Don't clip them or take them to their limits and they will last a long time.
