Subwoofer Flutter (Rattle)?

What does it mean when a subwoofer makes a weird flutter (rattle) sound when it plays?

Even at low volumes it makes this odd noise.

No noise when the cone is push slightly in and out and the coils are fine.

its an old school type r, so no dust cap, just a big bowl.

hmm thats odd. The surround on a sub I used to have separated from the cone in an area less than an inch long and caused that problem.

check if you screwed your sub all the way into your box. I had about a millimeter between the sub and the box and it made that noise. Screwed the woofer in all the way and it fixed the problem.

I did, but not thoroughly

It is an air leak somehow by the sounds of it. Dishsoap/bubblejuice the top of the woofer/box and see where it is leaking. If you can't find it from that then you need to return it to where you got it from and get a replacement
