Subsonic filter - i need educating..

So i read my manual of my sub and i remember it saying set subsonic filter to 20hz.. Didnt think anything more of it.

Today i was talking to one of my friends about why it was distorting so bad at 1000w and he said, well what was your sub sonic filter at, and i said 20hz.. He said that sounds low, what is the box ported at, i said 30hz.. he said it should be set at or just above 30hz...

is this true?

And if so what kind of difference would it make in my case? (from 20hz to 30hz)

ive always just set mine by ear. most people should be able to get rid of the distortion (caused by the SSF) just by simply playing a song they recognize at a decent volume and adjusting it by ear.

and i believe ive heard the same, set it just over where your box is tuned. i still set mine by ear, and im not sure how that coincides with how my box is tuned.

Hmm, i think it was clipping too..

I bought a powerful amp that i know does 1600w at 1 ohm rms.

I just wanted to get it to 1000w..

Why was i having trouble getting it to reach 1000w?

My battery doesn't drop below 13v on bass hits

i have a 130a alternator

and big 3 in 4 ga

4ga wire about 13ft

It never has went over 60amps on the line though (current AGU fuse on 4ga wire) Even when i had it at like 780w with gain way high. Waiting for 100a to arrive monday.

Also in the post above i just set it to ~26hz.. Before it was at 20hz

I do notice a small difference in the way the bass hits the lows. Might be "placebo" but i think its more controlled.

Well my box is custom built. Sounds GREAT at 510w rms but trying to push above that (my attempt at 780w at 59v with 19amps of current from sub) and it sounds like dumptrucks driving through a nitroglycerin plant.

box specs

2.5 cubes ported at 30hz

Might throw this in the cocktail...

my lights dim at 510w rms (its set at 40v ac from the amp but after factoring in amperage its 510w true rms.) 18 amps x 40 ac volts = 720 * .707 = ~510w
