Basicly when you hook up your amp and you sub you are creating an electrical circuit. The subwoofer is only acting as a resistor in this circuit. Like any resistor they come with different OHM ratings. The way you pick your OHM rating is mostly based on what amp you want to get, different amps put out different wattage based on how much resistance they get from the subwoofer. Thats why you see amps rated at like 1000W @1Ohm, 700W @2Ohm 500W @4Ohm or something like that.
Some subs have 2 sets of "resistors" aka voice coils in them and depending how you wire them, parallel or series, they will give different OHMs resistance. Example a Dual 4 Ohm wired in parallel will show 2 Ohms to the amp, there you would want an amp that puts out the max RMS of your sub @ 2 Ohms.
Hope this helps you understand, just read up about how to wire voice coils (parrallel or series) and pick an amp that will give the right watts at the OHMs you wire it to.
Hope that helps.
