Sub Mounting Question

I got my two 15" SX's today and now i am very close to install time.....i had NG design me a box and i've almost finished building it....all that is left is putting the top on and cutting out the holes.....my question is how i should mount the subs in the box.....i was planning on having them facing the back bumper, mounted port side but there is only about 4 inches of clearance from the box to the back of my grand cherokee.....will this be enough room for the air?.....if i chose to mount the subs on top, rather than on the port side would that have a great affect on the sound?.....ive never heard any subs that weren't mounted port side before.....here's the box plans btw..... http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/6964/enclosuredesign6zk.jpg

any input would be appreciated

Thanx

Well, wha yu have to realize is is that a sealed box is not as loud as ported, so if all the air cant get out fot he box because of the resistance from the back trunk, it will not ahve as greaT As preformance as haveing ports on top, Its kind of like if u put your hands over the ports and sealed them, u got a sealed box right thurr. SO i would moun them at the top , just so you get the max airflow.

I agree with the first part of your statement...the second part is sketchy.

It doesn't matter what side of the box you use, just depends on your install. Most put them on the same plane as the driver, but you're not limited to that. And it certainly doesn't have anything to do with the air flow out of the port.

but do u think if i had them rear-facing, with only about 4 inches between the box and back gate.....it would affect the sound very much?...like muffle it n make it not as loud as it could be?

I usaully see people recommend at least 5inches of breathing room for the port. If you are really concerned about it, port it up with the sub facing the side. Maybe later you could make another box with both on the side since you already have the plans and compare.

i already built the box....minus cutting out holes for the subs....and i dont really have the room to design it to be ported a different way and still be tuned at 32 hz

subs up/ports back has been good in every cherokee i've seen. CRX style //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif (i've seen this style setup in cherokee get very loud) Try it, and if you don't like it, either build another box or cut a piece of mdf and glue/nail it to the top to seal sub holes and try again
