Sub box build: Tuning vs air displacement which is more criticial?

I'm limited on space for a built in my ford focus, but which is more critical; box tuning or the air displacement? I know they both go hand in hand, but If you had to sacrifice one which would be best to keep? I like low tuned boxes to hit those deep bass notes! Any help or input is appreciated.
