sub and port direction for a hatch

Ok so I read/was told that for a hatch it would be best to have a top mount sub and a rear facing port. Is that correct? Why is that? I always though it would be better to have the sub and port facing the rear so the waves bounce more?

Firing up in the very back of a hatch creates what is known as the "horn effect". Look that up too.
