stupid question from me i guess

active means that you either have an active crossover unit, or your h/u is active capable. this allows you to precisely control the sound to each individual speaker say in a 2 or 3 way componant set. it controls, slope, x-over points, freq. range, etc

the difference is a passive crossover is not directly powered from a 12 volt source and they are generally pre-set from the factory so you get whatever sound they set up from the factory. Active processing allows precise control and allows you to tailor the sound to your liking
