Studio Mic's

I am a shure fan for the money its good stuff. I haven't bought anything like that in 8-10 years so I don't know of any new brands. most people I know have shure stuff and one friend even has a 1930s RCA

Ive been recording now for about 3 years at first I started with a MXL 990 condenser mic....When I started out I thought it was the Sh!t. But, then I started to get a little more serious and now I have a Neumann M147 wich is closer to top of the line mics. But bro a efficient mic that will get the job done I'd suggest Audio technica or AKG check out musiciansfriend.com they have most brand mics and you can find one within you preffered price range. Stay far away from Nady mics. Nady mics = doo-doo. Hope this helps you.

Are you running phantom power off your mixer?
I had an AKG condenser I was using for a while as a radio mic...worked great.
When I had my MXL mic used a mic preamp through a m-audio interface and that gave the 48v phantom power but now I use a PreSonus Firestudio and a digidesign Mbox depending on what Im doing.

That question was for me right?

i love me some Audio technicas. they sound great for the price on just about anything. used the 4050 and 4060 on vocals, guitar, drums bass and room mic. mic placement is everything though. what are you doing vocal wise? for music?

If you don't want to spend thousands of dollars, im using an AKG 214 for vocals right now...not my ideal choice, but it's what the artist wanted to do. It doesn't sound too bad, it has a bit too much bottom end for my taste in vox, but it gets the job done. Also, I agree with cshaw for using audiotechnicas, sound pretty good for the price.

Yeah, im gonna be using phantom power

Vocals only
just go with a Shure SM58. About $100. You can find deals on eBay but watch out my bro got scammed for a fake SM58 the other day, they send it in a real shure box and everything, says shure on it and all, it's just lighter than most mics and is missing some of the writing on lip of the mic but you really should invest about a couple hundred bucks into a nice 2 channel pre-amp they make all the difference in the world.

meh

also if your only recording vocals and doing all the music on a computer, investing in a nice word clock to sync everything up will be worth it, especially if you dont plan to spend that much a mic. and along with a good mic pre-amp your be surprised what you can get out of a cheap mic.
