**** Stock Radios

I have a 2000 Sunfire with a stock cd deck installed. My warranty ran out 2 months ago and GM won't do any warranty work on my car (bastards, it's only been 2 months). Anyways, the driver side rear speaker cuts out for long periods of time. It comes on and off as it pleases. There is nothing wrong with the speaker because it works, even if it is infrequently. I checked the connections at the speaker and everything was fine. So now I want to rip apart the dash and look at the deck. However, I don't know how to tackle that. It has one of those security features that it disables it when removed from the car (or does it?). If it does I don't want that to happen. I can't afford a new deck and install so I would like to try and fiddle with it myself. SO, my questions are as follows:

1) Will the deck be disabled if i muck around with it?

2) Any thoughts on what the problem may be (please note the other 3 speakers work all the time)?

3) Is it difficult to take apart

4) What would you recommend I do?

Thanks guys! Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Can't tell you about the security feature...not sure. Even if it does you should be able to get the code from the manafacturer to turn it back on. However, I doubt it has this feature.

Difficulty level is all relative....with little experience...yes it will probably be difficult. Just be gentle and try not to break anything, and set aside plenty of time to work on it. There's only one way learn...Just do it.

It could be any number of problems....Head unit could be going, speaker harness could be shorting or the speaker coils could be going. If you have a DVM check for contunity between ground and each speaker lead as well as between the two leads themselves (make sure speaker harness is disconnected from both ends) . Use the DVM to check resistance of the speaker coil (should be somewhere between 2 and 8 ohms). While your doing the above two checks move around the components and wires to see if this effects any of the readings...also known as the "wiggle test". If these two items check out it might be your head unit is on the way out....Try and measure the voltage, from as close as you can to the head unit, while your listening to your stereo. If the voltage goes to zero (and there is sound from all your other speakers) it is most likely a bad HU that will have to be replaced. In lieu of a DVM try replacing each component one by one. Fashion up a wire harness and use a different speaker. This is just a quick overview of things that might be wrong and some ways to check them out.
