Sticky Request: The real reason subs are "broken in"

Very commonly people think a given driver needs "broken in."

Actual T/S parameters are changed marginally, if at all, by feeding a brand new woofer power (either music or test tones) for a certain period of time.

A speaker is sent a signal for a given period of time, let's say 24 hours, only to check for defects in the driver.

Examples

Misaligned VC

Soft parts separating from one another

The suspension may soften up slightly for a very slight gain in effciency

Some hardcore SPL people (like myself) claim noticeable increases in SPL on the Termlab when measured a new driver vs. a few burps. I however have never seen that happen in all the new drivers ive tested....if anything there was some decrease in overall output. Its simply an old wives tale, no matter if its your wife telling it or a noob on a forum //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Dan, I can believe that in all out SPL subs, triple stiff spiders and all. Very stiff suspension will loosen up over time and add to efficiency.

In general, a new sub, let's say a Type R is the same from day one to day 1000.

Most average guys asking about "break in" and so forth aren't running DD 9500's or TC 4HPs.

These are examples on an extreme end of the spectrum.

Average woofers/mids aren't going to have any of these effects.

what about the kickbass mids from rainbow? If I can recall they give very clear instructions on how to break those in

Haha, if they were so clear, why are you having such a hard time remebering them?
