mono is probably better for bass reproduction. the reason you would bridge your amp is to gain more power from it. most amps put out more power in bridged mode vs. stereo mode. you just have to be sure the amp can handle the ohm load being presented by the sub(s). you still need a stereo input from your HU to your amp, if you bridge it (or if it is a mono amp) it combines the left/right audio signals.

There is a good chance you could add some sort of Bluetooth or AUX input to a vintage stereo such as a 1978 Pioneer, maybe with a separate toggle...
