Steel Box?????

I was wondering about the possibility of a steel box. Maybe 1/8 or something not too thin welded and supported all the way around. What would be the positives and negavtives to this.

I was thinking

Positives

1) Could color match to the vehicle

2) could possibly be lighter or only as heavy as vehicle.

Negatives

1) Everything would have to be bolted to box.

2) Sealing everything up completly air tight.

Discuss. I think i like it. Has it been done.

gay idea....wood can painted, wood is much lighter, wood is much cheaper

You will hear a ring, I tinkered with this waaaaaay back when, before I joined the forum. I used 1/4" carbon steel of random kinds and sorts welded together for it, 1kW 12", I forget the brand and model it was so far back. It rang, other than that, works good if you can prevent the walls from flexing. They will if it isn't hard.

10 years ago a guy I know built a wall out of 1/4 steel welded it all up and still added a layer of mdf on the inside. was solid but very heavy

but you could weld steel frame basket speakers direct to the box. I have seen it tried wish i had pics but it was the days of real film in cameras

guy Eric Hun down here used steel to make a ported box to hold 6 15s, if not mistaken he used wood as a template, I don't remember all the stuff he used to make the box but it's in a walled Expedition.

i like the look of this..i had thought for a while about using the diamond plate to build a box.

It has been done before but i have never seen a steel box that wasnt a wall. there are a lot more down sides then you are thinking of. First running speaker wire you have to be careful because the whole box is conducive as well many other problems including cost and weight . if you are not doing something that is purely for SPL then don't.

I was just wondering, that picture that is posted looks to be aluminum which i would be able to go thicker with and stop flew and still be light. Ill proly just go wood anyway but i wanted to explore this idea.
