Here's how my audio system went:
I first bought a powered subwoofer (it's a fantastic sub) and wired it from my rear speakers using a hi-lo converter and that worked great. I wanted to get a aftermarket stereo though and do it right.
So I got one off crutchfield and it came with the jvc harness and the crutchfield one so that I didn't have to cut into mine.
The crutchfield harness used 4 RCA's for the speakers. And lo and behold I have 4 RCA females on the back of the stereo. So I went with that for a while and it sounded good but I left my sub plugged into my Hi-Lo. This new stereo plays differently and was making my sub sound terrible so I decided to plug it into the stereo.
How I went about doing this is in the beginning was to take my two rear RCA plugs and make two females off the JVC harness. Although no matter how I set the positive and negative I managed to do something to cause the radio to flash "protect" (so I wouldn't blow anything being dumb).
So then came the better idea to buy two Y adapters (1 male 2 female) and plug them into the Front RCA jacks on the stereo. Front Rear on left and Front Rear on right. I lose balance but who cares songs don't use balance. This leaves room for my subs to plug into the rear and me to change my stereo setting from rear to subw. Sounds good except one thing.. The sub can't push nearly as much bass out as it could on my stock stereo and there is a VERY annoying static noise coming from my tweeters. The static is the main concern. It doesn't raise with revs and it appears to only be active when the car is turned on. Don't matter if key is in acc or ON, only if the car is running. Please help! I've lost all ideas and can only think to ask car toys to take a look )=
Now this noise doesn't go away, sub plugged in and Y adapters or any combination. Unless car is not running or volume is at 0
