SS Reference amp Balanced/Unbalanced and the Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS

I have an old SoundStream Reference 644s amp and a Pioneer X9500BHS head unit that I'm installing. The amp has balanced and unbalanced inputs, and according to their manual requires a Balanced Line Transmitter in order to have the switches on balanced. I've also read that head units now days have balanced outputs. Is this correct and should I have the switches on the amp switched to balanced? The amp will be hooked up to 4channel RCAs from the head unit and NOT the 6-pin special cable and BLT.
