SPL and THD

SOOOO, you're willing to spend 500 dollars on an amp that will put out xWatts at 4 ohms, instead of 200 on an amp that will do xWatts at 1 ohm, just to avoid electrical problems, you could buy a couple batteries or pick up a used alt for 300 bucks.
Dude, it was just a hypothetical question. If you had read my first post it says money aside would this theory actually really be worth it... All i was asking was if someone had done or knows of some tests that were done concerning the THD and amount of RMS they were getting. If they got more RMS without clipping at a higher impediance with the same or less power consumption. Thats all.

Sure i'd go with the amp that pushes more power, if they were within 50 dollars of each other, but i doubt efficiency comes cheap.
Oh definately not, just looked at the AQ 2200d and at 1 ohm its 2200 ofcourse and at 4 ohm its a whopping 500... i dont see that happening anytime soon.

i think people are missing the fact that even if he runs 2 amps @ 4 ohms or 1 amp @ 1 ohm, if his end goal is a set watts lets say 1000, weather he splits that into 2 or 1 amps he will still be pulling the same amperage. its ohms law. 500 watt/13.5 volts=37 amps(times 2 for 2 amps is 74 amps) and 1000 watts/13.5 volts(still 74 amps) so in reality in an electrical system view its the same.

but as far as strain on amps, and thd. yes you will get better sound quality. but if your aim is spl, and not sq. then dont worry about thd AS MUCH as you are.

Prices aside... it would be way better all around to run a pair of big amps at 4ohms than a pair of smaller amps at 1ohm. The draw on the electrical will be similar since it takes power to make power, but efficiency is greatly increased and the strain on the amps will be greatly decreased.

The world record holder in USACi Street Beat uses this concept. He runs (4) 3500w amps at 2 or 4 ohms.
